Today's route
Today we did some sightseeing. Susan wanted to see the grave of Billy the Kid as he spent most of his adult life in this general area. The grave site is in Fort Sumner. Fort Sumner is a small little town that probably has less than 3000 people. The area is agricultural and is on the Pecos River. It is 85 miles from Roswell.
We went to the gravesite where there is a museum beside it. Unfortunately it was closed. We did spend some time in the grave yard. There were probably only a dozen graves in the place. Billy was buried there along with his friends. My read on that was they were his "gang". The pictures below do tell the story. The burial place for Billy and his friends has been enclosed in a cage. This was done reportedly because the tomb stone has been stolen twice and the last time it was recovered, they put the cage around it. The grave site is about 5 miles east of the town.
We went back into Fort Sumner to visit another museum that was related to Billy and the area. It was interesting and gave a lot of history of the area. After spending about $45 dollars in the gift shop and about an hour and a half looking at the museum, we left town to return back to Roswell. We were thirsty, but there was not even a small restaurant to get anything.
We spent the rest of the day just relaxing over a great pizza and spending time in the motel room. Tomorrow we will be spending time looking for real estate.
Here is an overview of the graveyard. Billy's marker is the one closest to the front.
If you can read this it tells about the theft of the marker. This is the marker of Billy's friends.
The gift shop in Fort Sumner. It is run by a family that has been in the area over a hundred years.
This is the road from Fort Sumner back to Roswell. Roswell plays alot on the "alien" landing.
Until tomorrow.
