Union City to Las Vegas
Susan said we would leave around noon. I thought that would mean about 2pm. We left at 1:30pm. Not to bad for us. Of course that meant we would be really late getting into Las Vegas. We pulled in around 11:30. We actually made good time if you figure that we stopped two times for meals of about one hour each. 8 hours driving to Las Vegas.
There are no pictures for this part of the trip. We just drove. The drive was easy for us but it was still a stressful day. We were about 2 hours out of Las Vegas when I noticed in my rear view mirror headlights bouncing back and forth. I saw what looked like a large SUV starting to spin out because of what looked like he got his left tires into the center shoulder. He was about 50 feet behind me with no other cars in between and accelerating. All of a sudden he was sideways at over 85 MPH and I watched him roll at least 5 times sideways and then end to end then into the right shoulder. He was actually catching up to me while he was rolling. I was hoping that they were wearing seatbelts because it was really bad with sparks and dust everywhere. I noticed that cars were pulling over so we just kept going on. There was nothing we could do that others that were already there could not do. We did get onto 911 to the CHP and they already had the call. We heard on the radio about an hour later that 6 people died. I'll probably keep the vision of the vehicle rolling in my memory for a while.
We arrived in Las Vegas and checked in. We stayed in an interesting hotel that was right out of the 60's. Let's put it this way, it was a class 'A' hotel. The name of the hotel is the Algeria Hotel. It was right across the street from the Riveria Hotel and Casino right on the Strip. Let me explain a little more. It was a class 'A' hotel in Algeria. At least that's where it would be. The amenities did include being right on the Strip, a swimming pool and Resturant. The rooms had a bathroom with a large 1 ft round wash sink with electrical outlet in the medicine cabinet so you could shave. The other elecrical outlet was directly behind the bed. At least it was quiet.
We decided to go to the Riveria to pay some money to the one armed gods and we did of course. Susan wants me to make sure that everyone knows we won $70. Actually, we went in with $100 and walked out with $70. That was the actual return from playing the dollar slots. We kept everything that came out and did not replay any of it.
We returned back to Algeria and went to bed about 2am.
Tomorrow Albuquerque.
